What we do and why.
Cortijo Búho is an educational facility where you can meet different species of owls and learn all about them as an individual and what their lives would be like in the wild.
Throughout time owls have always been regarded as enigmatic creatures, their bewitching eyes, their ability to turn their heads 270 degrees and their dawn and dusk activities.
Owls feature prominently in the myths and legends of a variety of cultures. These mysterious creatures are known far and wide as symbols of wisdom, omens of death, and bringers of prophecy. In some countries, they are seen as good and wise, in others they are a sign of evil and doom to come. There are numerous species of owls, and each seems to have its own legends and lore.
Sadly their habitat is being destroyed all over the world from deforestation to barn conversions, bit by bit their world changes for the worse and because we don't see them as often as we would have done 200 years ago, they're out of sight and out of mind.
A certain fantasy author brought them fleeting popularity but these beautiful birds are not pets and cannot be treated as so. They take specialist care and handling to ensure they're happy, healthy birds.
We promote bird of prey conservation actively, we have owl boxes sited throughout our area sponsored by the general public. By doing this it gives the birds shelter from the Winter temperatures and somewhere safe to nest, encouraging pairs to return to the area to breed year after year.
We are always available for advice on birds of prey whether out of interest or a rescue bird needing specialist care and recuperation, we have two sections in the mews for wild birds needing temporary care.
By teaching children about birds of prey generally we hope that their interest will grow and perhaps there'll be some budding falconers who can carry the age old tradition forward to further generations before it's lost completely.
Bird of prey experiences.
The basic bird of prey experience is 35 € per adult and 10 € per child under 12 years old and includes refreshments (tea/coffee or cold drinks). Duration 1.30 - 2hrs.
You will get to meet all the birds including Sasa the Harris hawk, learn about them as a species and as an individual. They all have very different and unique characters from the largest to the smallest.
You will fly three of the birds between your party, we will be there simply to show you how - You become the falconer.
You'll meet Darcy the rarest owl in the world.
Next it's feeding time for Mystic the Scops who prefers her dinner to be served at the table. Great photo opportunities.
Finally it's photo time where you can hold Molly, Darcy, Mystic, Pippin or Sasa - Perhaps Matty the Eagle owl but she's very heavy.
The full bird of prey experience is 50 € per adult and 20 € per child under 12 years old and includes a two course freshly prepared lunch.
Duration 3.30 - 4.00hrs.
As above but a more in depth insight into the day to day care of the birds, where they live and extended time with each for photographs etc.
Please choose which menu you'd like and let us know when you book - Cortijo Búho is not a restaurant but we like to make our guests feel as welcome as possible which is why we include lunch for extended experiences. Please be kind and choose the same menu for your entire party or contact us to discuss your requirements.
Chicken & sweet potato curry (medium heat) served with Basmati rice, naan bread and pickles.

Mustard & honey roasted chicken served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Dessert lemon drizzle cake served with fresh fruit and cream.
Pork slices in lime & coriander served with sauteed potatoes, chili kale and griddled tomatoes. Dessert Peach & caramel cake served with cream or yoghurt.
Shakshuka. A rich tomato, onion, garlic and sweet pepper sauce with home baked ham and baked eggs, served with crusty bread and garlic mayo'. Dessert spiced orange cake served with fresh cream or yoghurt.
Homemade herby sausages served in a Yorkshire pudding with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Dessert sherry trifle.
Beef stew and dumplings served with mustard mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Dessert apple crumble and cream or custard (or both).
Butternut squash stuffed with sweet peppers, onions, garlic, raisins, cherry tomatoes and chick peas served with herbed couscous. Dessert poached pears with vanilla syrup.
Mushroom bourgiugnon made with our own wine (no additives), a rich sauce gives this dish a wholesome taste, served with boiled potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Dessert lemon sorbet with poached oranges.
